Our kitchen redo

It's time for Kelly's tour again!  I'm late linking up, but thanks so much for stopping by!!

On Monday (10/4/10)  we moved.  ALL that work on our house and we sold it!  We must be crazy, but we're at it again.  I'll be posting new pics as we finish our new (to us) house, but until then, here's our old kitchen.

When we bought our house, it took a lot of imagination to know that we could turn this poor house that had been completely overtaken by horrible floral wall paper into a home that we could love.

The night we closed, we just had to move in.  We packed a bag and a cooler (because we had no fridge) and slept on an air mattress in the living room for about a month.  As we finished a room, we moved our stuff in.  It felt like forever, but in about two months the house was pretty close to being finished and thanks to a handy family (ESPECIALLY Justin's dad), we did the entire house ourselves, which saved a TON of money.

The biggest transformation, which you get to see first, was the kitchen.  (Pardon the junk everywhere...I told you we were camped out in the living room and there wasn't a clean spot in sight.)

Bye bye strawberry vines all over our walls and yucky cabinets, and hello navy and crisp white!

We're still trying to figure out what to put on the wall here...suggestions welcome! :)

We were harassed about painting the "real wood cabinets" but there was no convincing us to keep them.  We couldn't stand the cabinet color and already had our minds set on the navy walls (which people also thought was nuts!).  We replaced the icky white-ish formica counter tops with solid surface, the many layers of vinyl with hardwood, got a new fridge, faucet, and cabinet hardware.

We couldn't be happier with the way it turned out!

And this guy LOVES hanging out on the kitchen floor munching on cookies!

To our "Derrick Fans," sorry this wasn't a "normal" post, but we thought it would be fun.  We'll be posting surgery info asap...I'm calling AGAIN to see if they've decided on a date.

AND....for all of you local to us, we're having a breakfast at Fatz Cafe in Irmo on February 6 to kick off CHD Awareness Week.  All proceeds will go to MUSC's Pediatric Cardiology department for CHD research.  We hope to have a HUGE turnout, and would love to see you there.  If you want tickets (they're $7 for pancakes, sausage, fruit and drink, and kids 4 and under eat free), email me at carolinacarters@gmail.com.  If you want to help sell them, or volunteer to wait tables, we would LOVE, LOVE that too!!!  Let me know, and I'll keep you posted on how things are going.

  1. I think that it's beautiful. I would go for a very colorful and large canvas piece of artwork, something rather modern. Again -- wonderful job!

  5. Love your kitchen!! We just put white cabinets in ours and he walls are still white because I'm so indecisive about a color! I'm not afraid of dark colors but didn't think it would work in a kitchen... you have just proved me wrong and totally inspired me to go with the dark gray I've been imagining... thank you!

  9. Looks beautiful. Love the dark wall color! I'd suggest a collage of family pictures... white frames.. all different sizes. I think either black and white or colored pictures in the frames would work.
    Great job!

  17. Love your kitchen! We are hoping to paint our cabinets white soon...it seems like such a big job though!

For your dining area- I think a assymetrical dysplay of white framed photographs and art would be awesome. Or perhaps a couple of long white floating shelves for displaying. Check out

    http://www.younghouselove.com/photo-gallery-2/

They have long white shelves in their dining area...and they also have a couple of white frame groupings throughout their house...one in their little girl's room.

    Thanks for sharing your kitchen!
