I am Thankful.

I am so very thankful.

I am thankful for my amazing husband.  His support, his love, his understanding, his faithfulness.

I'm thankful for the life of my precious boy who is a constant reminder of the incredible God we serve.

I am thankful for the baby growing inside of me.  Thankful that we will be blessed again with a tiny life to care for, to enjoy, to protect and to love.

I am thankful for a loving, supportive family, who understands even when they don't want to.  I am thankful that they love my precious boy.

I am thankful for wonderful friends, both real life and virtual, for the support and love they share.

I am thankful for my heart momma friends.  But for some of them, my heart aches with an awful pain.  On a day filled with thanks, their hearts are filled with emptiness.  I am thankful to be able to pray for them.

I am thankful that we serve an awesome God.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  What are you thankful for?

Ninteen Months

Oh, Cheeky! I'm late again, but you're growing up so quickly that I can't keep up with you. You are NINETEEN MONTHS OLD already!!

You're still sporting your 12 month clothes (which still fall off of you, even the adjustable waist pants) and your size 3 diapers. You weigh 18 lbs, 14.5 oz (still in the zero percentile) and are 31 inches tall (10th percentile). You're still on your own growth curve so we'll take it! :)

You are so full of energy and so busy that it makes me tired just watching you. Sometimes I wonder what on earth we would do if you had 100% oxygen saturation...we'd NEVER keep up with you! Ha!

You repeat EVERYTHING you hear. The other day you were repeating everything Daddy said and when he asked if you were a parrot, you said, "Barrot."

You've been putting two or three words together a lot lately. My favorite is, "Hold you. Me." Last night you said, "Hold you. Couch. Me." You wanted to sit on the couch. It was really cute and so funny!

Andy (or Doodie, our daschound) has moved back inside since it's gotten cold. You LOVE having him inside! You ask about "Doodie" all of the time. You ask for food and water for him by getting his bowl and saying, "Doodie, wah wer, more!" You take such good care of him by making sure he has plenty of water, but I'm pretty sure it's not for his health...it's for your love of playing in his water. You also feed him at least half of everything you have to eat. He loves it, we do not!

You're very polite. You say please and thank you almost all the time.

You've started fake crying.

The other night you stood on your turtle and excitedly knocked a bunch of papers all over the floor. As soon as I saw you and said something to you, you said "Mime out!" (time out) I told you to just pick up the papers because I wasn't going to put you in time out since we had a little conversation about what you had done. When you finished cleaning up your mess, you said, "Mime out," walked over to your time out spot and sat down. Daddy and I were both shocked...and we had to turn our heads so you didn't see us laugh. Who does that?!

You have an obsession with standing and climbing on things. You will stand on something and say, "Sit down!" Although you don't actually sit until someone tells you to do it. You don't listen to yourself.

You run and hide when it's time to change your diaper. Often you can be found beside the couch or in our closet giggling because you think we can't find you. You're so rotten!

You love singing "Ee i ee i oh."

Your favorite time of day is "baff" time.  You get  pretty upset sometimes when it's time to get out.  You ask for a "baff" several times a day.

You enjoy waving at people. You love it when they're not paying attention to you, then you wave at them and get all kinds of attention. I think you purposely choose someone who is busy to try to distract and it usually works.

This cake that you're eating was part of our wedding cake!  Mamaw pulled it out of the freezer the other day when we were at her house and you had to have some.  It's 4 1/2 years old but you ate it like it was baked yesterday.  I didn't taste it...it just couldn't have been very good, but she said it was and so did you!

Cheeky, I can't believe how quickly time has flown by.  Sometimes I look at you and can't believe you're ours and that you're so big and strong.  You are one amazing little man and we love you more than anything!  We're so thankful for everyday we have with you...even when you're testing your boundaries, which you do quite regularly!  :)

We love you sweet boy, to the moon and back!
Mama and Daddy

"I used the same guard..."

D was getting a little shaggy. His hair grows very quickly (I'm sure if we have a girl she'll be bald), and he desperately needed another hair cut. Justin was up for the job. He took D into the bathroom, and when I walked in a few short minutes later I was a little shocked.

It was a little shorter than I had expected.  But it was a little too late too!  Justin said, "I used the same guard I use on my hair."  Ummm...

I think he felt guilty because he cut his hair too.  Using the same guard.

It's short, but cute!  On both of them! :)

The Details...

Thank you so much for all of the sweet comments and emails!  We love hearing from you and knowing that so many people are exciting about "meeting" and praying for the new baby!!

We've had lots of questions, so I'll try to (remember them and) answer them for you.

First of all, I will be 12 weeks Monday and I'm due May 23.  Yes, that means that Derrick will turn two in April and we will have a new baby almost exactly one month later.  We may be crazy, we haven't decided yet. Ha!  We think the two year difference will be good once they're a little older.  D likes to be a "melper" {helper} so maybe he'll stay in that stage for another two years or so.  :)

I have been feeling fine, just really tired.  It's much different this time around!  When I was pregnant with Derrick I would come home from work and nap or hang out on the couch when I wanted to.  BIG difference now!  Chasing an 18 month old isn't exactly relaxing, but I wouldn't have it any other way.  I haven't gotten sick at all (I only did twice with D), but I've been on the verge many times.  As long as I eat every couple of hours I'm good to go.  Very thankful for that!

When we found out about Derrick's heart, I told Justin I wasn't sure if I wanted to have any more children.  As time went on and we accepted what God had given us, I realized that He had a plan for us, even if it wasn't MY plan.   {That seems to happen often, doesn't it?}  We met with a genetic counselor shortly after D came home from the hospital to see what the odds were of having another heart baby.  Given Derrick's defects and our family history (which has no heart defects that we're aware of), we have a 5-8% chance of having another child with some form of a CHD.  The likelyhood of having another "complex little heart" like Derrick's is pretty slim.  Anyone has a 1% chance of having a heart baby, and the likelyhood does go up if you've already had one (even though most CHDs don't have a genetic link, which I find strange seeing that your chances of being the 'lucky one' go up with another child), but it's a chance we're willing to take. Also, the data they have to go on with CHD stats is slim.  There aren't years and years worth of family history of CHD patients to look at because the record keeping and research for CHD is all fairly new.  So how accurate is the prediction really...

Before becoming pregnant, or even deciding for sure that I wanted to do it again, I prayed about it a lot.  Neither of us want to ever hear, "There's something wrong with your baby's heart," ever again.   I have asked God, once again, for a healthy baby.  I sure hope our ideas of a healthy baby are the same this time, but if they're not, we will accept what He has given us, and we will do our best and give Him the glory.  That's all we can do.  We pray.  We would greatly appreciate your prayers for this baby just as we appreciate them for Derrick.  They are powerful, we have seen that first hand.

So to answer the question about being worried about the new baby's heart....
Yes, I am nervous.  However, I try not to think about all the time.  I'm sure we'll both be really nervous going into that 20 week appointment and waiting as they do the ultrasound, but there's nothing we can do about it.  We will enjoy this pregnancy just like we tried to do with the second half of Derrick's.  The innocence and blissfulness of pregnancy was ripped away from us two years ago.  But we will enjoy this, no matter what.  :)

Do we want a boy or girl....
Ha!  Ok.  I can tell you that one half of our family is shouting girl.  There are four grandsons on Justin's side of the family, so they're all cheering for a girl.  On my side there are two granddaughters and three grandsons.  It doesn't matter either way, this one will just be one of the crowd.  With that being said, it would be fun to have a girl because, well, we already have a boy and she would be the first girl on Justin's side of the family.  BUT...we already have a BOY, so it would be much cheaper to have another boy!  Either way, we honestly don't care.  And we can say this time, even more than last, that all we want is a healthy baby!

The plan...
The plan for this pregnancy is just like any other.  I have an appointment next week and we should be able to hear the baby's heart beat.  :)  I will have the standard 20 week ultrasound to check out all of the organs (and find out the sex!!), then, even if everything checks out fine with the heart, we will see D's cardiologist at 24 weeks for a fetal echo.  That's it.  Just regular monthly (then bi-monthly, etc) checkups with the OB with an added fetal echo.  We've already made the appointment for that.  Next time D goes to see Dr. Shuler (in February), so do I!

I think that's pretty much everything, but if you have more questions, let me know!

This guy has NO IDEA what's about to happen, but trust me, he does not need to be an only child! :)
