Christmas 2010

Now, before I get started, let me appoligize in advance for the horrible quality of these pictures. 

Awful lighting + active children = terrible pictures 

But y'all know me, and I have to have this in "the books."

So...

On Christmas Eve afternoon, Derrick and I headed to Gong-Gong's for Christmas with my family.  Justin had to work so he missed out on these festivities.  :(
Derrick has been obsessed with the vacuum cleaner since he was a tiny little guy.  He was saying vacuum before he said mama, and I'm not kidding one single bit!  Needless to say, as soon as he opened up his very own red vacuum, it was all over for him.  He was in heaven and wasn't concerned with anything else he received (which was lots of other great stuff).

After a few hours at Gong-Gong's we headed home and Justin's side of the family came over.  We had steaks and baked potatoes...oh, so good!  
D got the hang of opening presents,

and he received another of his very favorite gifts...his very own basketball goal!  He LOVES to "ooot" ball.  So cute!  He even puts the ball "night night" when he's finished playing with it.

Carter has this Christmas-present-opening-thing down pat.

He even understands that you have to stop for pictures.

Papaw finally got his guitar!  Derrick is going to LOVE it when Justin and Papaw figure out how to make music!!
We had a great time with lots of good laughs!

Christmas morning D woke up to see if Santa came despite his behavior a few days earlier


One of D's favorite things to do is to play with Justin's tools, so he was excited that Santa brought him his own.




For lunch, we headed over to my parents' house where we ate too much (for the third time in a day and a half) and just hung around all afternoon.


Derrick got a wheelbarrow and he and Sheaffer took it for a test drive around the yard.


We played outside for a little while but it was c-o-l-d!

We did manage to get a group shot of all of the grandchildren, but the little guy had had enough!  A late night, early morning, and no nap makes for one unhappy little guy!!
I can't believe we'll have another little person to add to this picture next year!! :)

We had a great Christmas!  We spent lots of time with our families, ate way too much (hate to find out how much weight I've gained this month!) and D opened WAY too many presents.

We woke up the morning after Christmas to one more gift...

This NEVER happens here the day after Christmas!

Poor Santa!

We went to see Santa again this year.  Someone didn't like him.

Poor Santa!  He really did try!

This was the closest D would let him get and you can see that he was not even interested with Justin holding him. 
Santa told us he would love him next year.  We'll see!

I Probably Shouldn't Photograph This

The other morning I was trying to get the rest of the Christmas presents wrapped. Why I chose to do this after Derrick woke up is beyond me. 

He did quite well with the Christmas tree. Much, much better than I anticipated. However, I guess since I was on the floor with presents, he thought he should be too.






When I asked D to put the presents back under the tree, this is how he returned them.
I guess we need to work on under and in, huh?

By the time everyone received their presents they were semi-pre-opened and all missing bows.  :)  Oh well!  The presents probably won't be pretty for the next five years!  

I'll have Christmas updates coming this week.  Christmas night Santa brought me a little gift of the stomach bug...super yuck!  I'm feeling human now thanks to many hours of snoozing on the couch (thanks to my sweet hubby who called Mamaw and Papaw to come get D while he worked so I could recoup!!) and some saltine crackers.  Needless to say, I'm way behind on everything Christmas.  It's coming...lots to share!

20 Months!!

Twenty months.  That sounds so strange!  Where on earth has my baby gone?  


You are one funny, busy little chatterbox and nothing slips by you!

You still weigh right around 19 pounds (we're hoping you've hit the 19 pound mark), you wear 12 month pants (as long as there's an adjustable waistband that's pulled really tight) and can wear from 12-18 month shirts.  You wear a size 4 shoe and a size 3 diaper.  I can happily say that we've gotten our money's worth out of your clothes!


You are quite the talker.  You will repeat anything and everything you hear and you're pretty articulate.  

You have recently started calling yourself "Berrick."  You'll say, "Berrick, noise," or "Berrick, meepy {sleepy}" or whatever/however "Berrick" is feeling at the time.  It's pretty funny.

You can name the sounds of a sheep, dog, cat, horse, pig, and duck.  You've gotten pretty animated with your sounds too.

You love putting things in containers then moving them to another container.  For example, right now you're playing with five wire-nut-cap-things (don't know the technical name for them) and you put them in one cup then into another.  I know that's not the best toy for a boy your age, but we're always watching you when you have them and you've never been a put-it-in-your-mouth kind of kid anyway.  We've always had to force you to put things in your mouth.  They're pretty big too.  But I promise, we're watching!

You love sitting by the Christmas tree playing with your toys.  You'll go behind the tree and play and not make a sound.  It reminds me of when I was growing up...I used to sit beside the Christmas tree and do my homework or talk on the phone.  I'm glad you love the glow and the coziness of the tree.  :)


You LOVE Inspector Gadget!  We found an Inspector Gadget book that was daddy's when he was a boy and we have to read it every night.  I think that's the only book we've read at bedtime for at least three weeks.  When we say it's bedtime you say, "Gadget! read!"  Every night.  You point out Gadget, Brain, Penny and the bad guy.  I have no idea why you love it so much.  Daddy excitedly ordered you a dvd of about 30 episodes of Gadget and was so happy that it came on Saturday.  He was really excited to sit down and watch it with you.  Needless to say, he was pretty disappointed that you showed no interest after the theme song.  Poor daddy.  You just have no interest in tv. (Which makes me very happy!  Other than daddy being disappointed about Gadget, of course.)

You went into church with us yesterday.  We weren't sure how that would turn out since you haven't been in church since you were just a little guy.  We were so impressed with how quiet and still you were!  You loved the music!!  Maybe we'll start taking you in more often.  

You are a meat eater!  You would rather have meat than anything else.  We went to Taco Bell a couple of weeks ago and ordered you a chili cheese burrito and you scarfed down half of it!  That is SO unlike you, but you LOVED it!  You also love Chick-fil-a.  You will eat about two nuggets and an entire container of Chick-fil-a sauce.  You love the "bip" {dip} there.  (And it has a REDICULOUS amount of fat and calories so we let you have it!)  I'm not sure why, but you eat much better when we're at some fast food restaurant.  I guess you don't like my cooking. Ha!

For the most part you are a really good listener.  When we ask you to do something or not do something, you usually listen.  You haven't really messed with the Christmas tree, but you have been caught several times trying to unwrap presents.  



Your daddy and I think you are the funniest kid ever.  I'm sure all parents think their kid is the funniest, but we really think you are!  You keep us on our toes but we're usually laughing too!  (Sometimes I get in trouble for laughing at you but I just can't help it!)  When things slow down for a second and you're playing all by yourself, sometimes I watch you and could just cry about how quickly you've grown up already.  You're not a little baby anymore and that makes me both happy and sad at the same time.  You're a sweet, sensitive, amazing little man.  We love every single second we have with you, Cheeks, and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Overdue...

That seems to sum me up pretty well.  Overdue.   Library books. Movies.  Returned emails.  Trips to the grocery store.  Blog posts.  Baby news.  Phone calls.  They're all overdue.  {Thank goodness for bill pay on our bank's website or the bills would be overdue too! Ha!}  

What can I say...I work best under pressure. 
 
I'm really sorry for the lack of new baby updates.  I've had lots of questions about how we're doing because wow, I don't seem to get around to posting much about the new little peanut on here!  To be completely honest, the time has flown by so quickly that it's just crazy!  It's definitely different being pregnant the second time around!!  

I am finally able to go all day without a nap. :)  It was pretty sad there for a while.  I would beg Derrick to be ready to take his nap because I thought I was going to fall over if I wasn't able to go to sleep soon!  Every single day I needed to nap, no matter how much sleep I had gotten the night before.  I think I reverted back to my own two year old ways for about ten weeks.  It was not good!  Needless to say, me sleeping during naptime only intensified that "overdue-ness" that is me.

Anyway, the little peanut (who is actually the size of an avacado this week) seems to be doing well.  I went to the doctor last Wednesday and it was one of those non-eventful visits, which is very welcomed by us!  I really thought about begging for an ultrasound simply to find out if we could go out and buy something super girly or add to our collection of blue, but I didn't.  I really wanted to though!  I think I probably could have gotten away with it.  The doctors always say, "I'm sure you're ready for that ultrasound."  I think they're ready to know too.  Not what the baby is, but how it is.  

I'm trying not to let the how get in the forefront of my mind.  I'm trusting that this baby is exactly what and who God has planned for us to love.  That much we are guaranteed, and I'm ok with that.  We're focusing on getting names finalized and nursery plans made so that on January 6th we can go buy paint!  And just for fun, I've added a poll on the sidebar so you can make your guess about whether D will have a little brother or a little sister. :)

On to more overdue business...I need your help!  
Hope for BraveHEARTS is partnering with Ethin's Heart Still Beats to publish a cookbook.  We are super excited about this new project, but it definitely can't happen without your support.  Our goal is to have the cookbooks ready to be delivered during CHD Awareness Week, which is February 7-14th.  They will be available to pre-order very soon so I'll keep you posted on those details. 

Right now, I need your favorite recipes!  We would love to have the favorite, tried-and-true recipes from your recipe stash.  If your family has a favorite recipe, will you send it in for the cookbook?!  Please!!?  You can email it to me at carolinacarters@gmail.com.  Proceeds from the cookbooks that Hope for BraveHEARTS sells will go towards CHD research and to help fund BraveHEART Baskets.  We'll take recipes for the next two weeks...so get busy! :)

SNOW Much Fun! :)

{Please keep our friend Mason in your prayers!  He was flown down to MUSC on Friday and had emergency surgery.  He had a rough couple of days, but seems to be doing well right now.  Please keep him and his family in your prayers!!}

Last weekend we took a little trip to Tennessee to visit Nana, Mimi, and "Bamps."  We had a nice relaxing visit and a fun surprise!


First, we helped Nana put up her Christmas tree. 

Then, we played in the SNOW!! :)

There wasn't much accumulation on the ground, 
but there was plenty to play in on our car.

Now, you have to remember that we live in South Carolina.  
Yes, it gets cold here. 

However, it only snows every few years.  It snowed last year 
so we're not expecting to see the white stuff any time soon. 

It snows so rarely, in fact, that we did not prepare with waterproof gloves for our little guy.  He did have on gloves, but they were knit and would have been soaked in a couple of seconds.

Aunt Shirley (Mimi) being the creative mind she is, decided to put rubber gloves over D's knit gloves so his hands would stay dry.  Genius!


The rubber gloves seemed to put a damper on D's ability to play in the snow.  In case this was his only opportunity to play in the snow this year, we decided that he should have a little freedom.

So we stripped him of his gloves

and he loved it!

It was so much fun to watch the amazement on his face.

We tried to convince him that it was fun to eat snow (you know it's true), but he wasn't so sure.  Daddy had to show him that it really was ok. 

Once Daddy did it, D was all for it!

He couldn't get enough!
